Purpose-Built for Continuous Variable-Speed Operation Under PWM Supply

The YVF2 is Korea Ever-Power dedicated inverter duty motor, engineered from the outset for operation with pulse-width-modulated variable-frequency drives rather than modified for this duty after the fact. Three design elements distinguish it from a standard Y2 motor operated on a VFD: reinforced inter-turn insulation rated to withstand repetitive voltage spikes up to 1600 V peak, a separately powered external cooling blower that maintains full rated airflow at any shaft speed from 0 rpm upward, and embedded PTC thermistors in each winding phase for direct thermal protection independent of motor speed.

The constant-torque speed range extends from 5 Hz (approximately 150 rpm for a 4-pole motor) to 50 Hz (1450 rpm), with rated torque maintained across the full range without derating. Above 50 Hz, the motor enters constant-power (field-weakening) mode up to a maximum of 100 Hz, suitable for fan and pump loads that require speed above base frequency. This combination of wide low-speed torque capability and high-frequency extension makes the YVF2 suitable for a broader range of variable-speed duties than any single fixed-speed motor model.

Frame sizes range from 90L through 315M, covering 0.75 kW to 200 kW. All units carry Class H insulation (180 °C rated) with Class F temperature-rise limits, CE marking, and IP54 protection as standard (IP55 available on request).

Typical Applications for YVF2 VFD Inverter Duty Motors

YVF2 Motor Variable Speed Pump Application

Variable-Speed Pumps
Water supply booster pumps, cooling-water circulation pumps, and process fluid transfer pumps use the YVF2 with a VFD to match pump output to demand, reducing energy consumption and eliminating throttle valve pressure losses.
YVF2 Motor Textile Variable Speed Application

Textile and Converting Lines
Spinning frames, winding machines, and coating lines require continuous speed control from near-zero to full speed with full torque maintained throughout. The YVF2 wide constant-torque range eliminates the multi-motor changeover typical of fixed-speed systems.
YVF2 Motor Variable Speed Conveyor Application

Mining and Heavy Conveyors
Belt conveyors and apron feeders under load require controlled soft-start and speed ramp capability. The YVF2 with VFD provides smooth starting torque from zero speed, eliminating mechanical starting shock and reducing belt and coupling wear.
🎬
Film Winding and Unwinding
Tension-controlled film and foil winding machines require torque regulation independent of shaft speed as roll diameter changes. The YVF2 in torque-control mode maintains constant web tension from empty core to full roll without dancer-roll hunting.
🌞
HVAC Fan Drives
Air handling unit fans and cooling-tower fans operated with VFDs and YVF2 motors save 30 to 60% of fan energy compared to fixed-speed operation with damper control, with payback periods typically under 18 months at continuous duty.
🔧
CNC Machine Spindles
Machining centres and lathes use the YVF2 with a VFD for programmable spindle speed control across a continuous range, replacing mechanical gearboxes and belt-change arrangements in legacy machine tool retrofits.

Three Design Features That Make the YVF2 Suitable for VFD Duty

Reinforced Winding Insulation

PWM inverters generate voltage spikes at switching transitions that can reach 1600 V peak in a standard 380 V system, far exceeding the turn-to-turn insulation rating of a conventional motor winding. The YVF2 uses corona-resistant enamel wire (Class H, 180 °C rated) with doubled inter-turn insulation paper and a vacuum-pressure impregnation (VPI) process that eliminates air pockets where partial discharge would otherwise initiate winding degradation. All windings are tested at 2500 V AC for one minute before dispatch.

Independently Powered External Cooling

A standard induction motor relies on its shaft-mounted fan for cooling; at low shaft speed the fan delivers inadequate airflow and the motor overheats under load. The YVF2 uses an IC416 cooling arrangement: a separately powered single-phase blower motor (50 W, 220 V) drives a constant-speed axial fan that maintains full rated airflow at any shaft speed from 0 rpm to maximum. This is the key engineering change that enables full rated torque from near-zero speed without thermal derating.

PTC Thermistor Protection

Three PTC thermistors (one per phase) are embedded in the stator end-windings and wired to an external thermistor relay in the control panel. When winding temperature exceeds the PTC switching threshold (typically 130 °C for Class H insulation), the relay trips the VFD input contactor before thermal damage occurs. This protection is independent of motor speed and supply frequency, providing reliable over-temperature protection across the entire VFD operating range where conventional thermal overload relays lose accuracy due to harmonic heating effects.

Frequently Asked Questions — YVF2 Series VFD Inverter Duty Motor

Can I use a standard Y2 motor on a VFD instead of the YVF2?
A standard Y2 motor can be used on a VFD over a limited speed range (approximately 25 to 50 Hz) with reduced load at low speeds due to inadequate cooling and standard inter-turn insulation that may not withstand repetitive PWM voltage spikes. For continuous operation below 25 Hz at rated torque, for high-cycle applications, or wherever motor reliability over a 10-year service life is required, the YVF2 is the correct specification. The cost difference between a Y2 and a YVF2 at the same frame size is typically recovered within the first year of operation through avoided motor replacement.
Does the external blower motor require a separate power supply?
Yes. The IC416 external blower fitted to the YVF2 is a separate single-phase motor (typically 50 W to 120 W depending on frame size) powered from a standard 220 V 50 Hz single-phase supply independent of the main motor circuit. The blower must run whenever the main motor is energised, including during slow-speed and standstill operation. Korea Ever-Power recommends wiring the blower motor contactor in parallel with the VFD run signal so that the blower starts and stops with the main motor automatically.
What VFD carrier frequency is recommended for the YVF2?
Korea Ever-Power recommends a VFD carrier frequency of 4 to 8 kHz for the YVF2. Higher carrier frequencies (above 10 kHz) generate shorter voltage rise times and higher peak voltages at the motor terminals, increasing stress on the inter-turn insulation. If the installation requires carrier frequencies above 8 kHz for noise reduction, output du/dt filters or sine-wave filters should be fitted between the VFD and the motor to limit the peak voltage at motor terminals to below 1000 V.
Is the YVF2 available in 2-pole and 6-pole configurations?
Yes. Korea Ever-Power supplies the YVF2 in 2-pole (base speed 2900 rpm), 4-pole (1450 rpm), and 6-pole (960 rpm) configurations across most of the power range. The table above shows the most commonly ordered 4-pole variant. 2-pole and 6-pole models are available on request; lead times for non-standard pole configurations are typically 4 to 6 weeks. Contact Korea Ever-Power with your required pole count, power, and frame size preference.
How should motor cable length be managed with a VFD installation?
Long cables between a VFD and motor act as a transmission line at PWM switching frequencies, causing voltage reflections that increase peak voltage at the motor terminals. Korea Ever-Power recommends keeping motor cable length below 50 metres for standard YVF2 installations. For cable runs of 50 to 150 metres, output reactors or du/dt filters should be fitted at the VFD output. Cables should be shielded, with the shield earthed at both ends to the motor frame and VFD chassis, to reduce radiated EMC emissions.
What encoder options are available for closed-loop VFD control?
Korea Ever-Power can supply the YVF2 with a non-drive-end shaft extension for encoder mounting as a factory option. Incremental encoders (1024 PPR standard, other resolutions on request) and resolver feedback options are available for closed-loop vector control applications requiring precise speed and torque regulation. The encoder is wired directly to the VFD encoder feedback card. Specify the required encoder type and VFD brand when ordering to ensure connector and signal compatibility.
