Small Power Motor for Light Industrial Drives:
YS Series 25 W to 750 W Selection Guide

Light industrial applications requiring less than 750 W of motor power cover an enormous range of machinery: small conveyors, laboratory equipment, agricultural feeders, textile accessories, printing machine auxiliaries, and light duty pumps and fans. These drives frequently use single-phase motors or fractional-horsepower DC motors that are difficult to source, prone to radio frequency interference, and expensive to replace. The Korea Ever-Power YS series offers three-phase squirrel-cage reliability in a compact IEC frame from 25 W to 750 W, covering all light industrial small-power drive applications at a fraction of the total ownership cost of equivalent single-phase alternatives.

Small power motor YS series light industrial 25W 750W IEC frame Korea Ever-Power three-phase compact

Korea Ever-Power YS series small power motor — compact IEC metric frame from 63 to 90, 25 W to 750 W, three-phase squirrel-cage construction with no capacitors, no brushes, and no commutator. The correct replacement for single-phase, shaded-pole, or fractional-horsepower DC motors in light industrial applications requiring improved reliability and lower maintenance.

1. Why Choose Three-Phase Below 750 W?

The perception that motors below 750 W should always be single-phase is a historical artefact from the era when three-phase supply was not available in small workshops. In virtually all modern industrial facilities, three-phase 380 V supply is available at every production machine. Using three-phase motors throughout the facility — including for small auxiliary drives below 750 W — provides substantial advantages over single-phase alternatives.

No Capacitor — No Capacitor Failure

Single-phase motors below 750 W typically use run capacitors to create the phase shift needed for starting and running torque. These electrolytic capacitors have a service life of 3 to 7 years in continuous industrial service and are the most common failure cause for small single-phase motors. A failed run capacitor causes the motor to draw high current, overheat, and either trip the overload or fail the winding. The YS three-phase motor has no capacitors — its squirrel-cage rotor requires no starting or running capacitor and produces full torque from a three-phase supply without additional components.

Higher Efficiency

Three-phase squirrel-cage motors have significantly higher efficiency than equivalent single-phase capacitor-run motors at the same power rating. A single-phase 370 W motor typically runs at 65 to 72% efficiency; the YS 370 W three-phase motor runs at 75 to 82% efficiency — a saving of 10 to 17% in power consumption for the same mechanical output. Over 8,000 hours per year at an electricity tariff of $0.13/kWh, the energy saving from switching to three-phase at 370 W is approximately $65 per motor per year — more than the cost difference between the motors in under 2 years.

Lower Starting Current

Single-phase motors have very high starting current — typically 5 to 8 times rated current — which can cause voltage dips on the supply circuit that affect nearby sensitive equipment. The YS three-phase motor starting current is 4.5 to 6 times rated across three phases, and the supply current draw per phase is lower than a single-phase motor of equivalent power because the power is shared across three conductors rather than concentrated in two. This reduces voltage drop at machine startup and eliminates the flickering on nearby lighting that single-phase motor starting can cause.

Longer Service Life

The squirrel-cage three-phase motor has no brushes, commutator, starting relay, or run capacitor — the only wearing components are the bearings. With correct bearing selection and lubrication, the YS motor service life is 15 to 25 years in light industrial service, compared to 5 to 10 years for a typical single-phase motor with equivalent maintenance. This longer service life reduces the total cost of ownership of the drive system despite the potentially higher initial motor price.

4. YS Motor with NMRV Gearbox for Low-Speed Light Industrial Drives

The YS motor uses the same IEC metric frame mounting dimensions as the standard Y2 series (IEC 63, 71, 80, 90), allowing it to connect directly to all NMRV 025 through 063 worm gearboxes using the standard IEC B5 motor flange. The combination of a YS 90 W to 370 W motor with an NMRV 025 to 050 gearbox at ratios from 5:1 to 100:1 provides output speeds from 14 to 288 rpm — covering the full speed range of agricultural feeders, small dosing conveyors, agitators, and slow-moving display or retail drives.

YS + NMRV Combination Examples
Poultry Feeder Pan Drive
YS 120 W, 4-pole + NMRV 030, 60:1 = 24 rpm output. Slow reliable feed pan rotation without the capacitor failures of single-phase motors in dusty poultry house environments.
Agitator for Small Tank
YS 180 W, 4-pole + NMRV 040, 40:1 = 36 rpm. Mixing adhesives, resins, or chemical solutions in 50 to 500 litre tanks. No brush arcing near solvent vapours.
Seed Drill Metering Roll
YS 90 W, 4-pole + NMRV 025, 80:1 = 18 rpm. Precise slow seed metering with high start torque from the worm gear ratio. Three-phase supply from tractor PTO generator.
Laboratory Tumbler Drive
YS 60 W, 4-pole + NMRV 025, 100:1 = 14 rpm. Long-duration tumbling of test samples in laboratory or quality control applications. Very quiet, no brush noise, no RFI.

5. YS Motor with Micro-VFD for Variable Speed Control

The YS three-phase motor can be operated with a micro-VFD (variable frequency drive for small motors, typically 0.1 to 2.2 kW) to provide continuously adjustable speed from zero to rated speed without the complexity, maintenance, or RFI of a DC motor speed controller. This combination replaces the traditional single-phase motor with triac speed controller or brushed DC motor with speed controller in applications requiring adjustable speed in the fractional-kW range.

Advantages over Triac-Controlled Single-Phase

Triac speed controllers for single-phase motors produce significant RFI that can interfere with PLC inputs, sensors, and communication equipment in the same panel. A micro-VFD on a YS three-phase motor produces much less RFI (particularly when the VFD output filter is fitted) and provides smooth torque from zero speed, whereas a triac controller loses torque at low speed because the motor cannot produce adequate torque at reduced voltage on a single-phase supply. The VFD-YS combination maintains full motor torque down to approximately 10% of rated speed.

Speed Range and Applications

A micro-VFD driving a YS motor provides 0 to rated speed (0 to 50 Hz) with linear torque capability throughout, and can be programmed for acceleration and deceleration ramps to eliminate mechanical shock on startup. This combination is ideal for: screen printing table drive with adjustable squeegee speed; textile winder with adjustable tension; agricultural feeder with rate adjustment from operator panel; and laboratory stirrer with calibrated speed display. A single micro-VFD can drive any YS motor in the 25 W to 750 W range, providing a standard control platform for multiple drive sizes.

Textile and Printing Machine Auxiliaries

Small auxiliary drives on textile machines — thread tension control winders, fabric inspection table slow-drive, screen printing squeegee table indexer — require compact motors below 370 W with precise speed control. YS 60 to 250 W with micro-VFD replaces brushed DC drives that generate brush dust contaminating the textile product, and eliminates the RFI from triac single-phase controllers that disrupts print registration sensors on screen printing machines.

Agricultural Feeder and Seed Metering

Poultry chain feeders, pig feeding chain systems, and seed drill metering rollers use small motors in dusty barn environments where single-phase capacitor motors fail frequently from capacitor corrosion and dust contamination of the centrifugal starting switch. YS 90 to 250 W with NMRV gearbox provides reliable brushless, capacitor-free operation in agricultural environments. The three-phase supply from the barn motor control centre simplifies wiring compared to running 220 V single-phase feeds to individual feeder drives.

Laboratory and Scientific Equipment

Laboratory tumble dryers, analytical sample rotators, slow-speed centrifuge drives, and instrument drive tables use YS 25 to 180 W with NMRV gearbox. Very quiet, no brush noise, no RFI — essential in laboratory environments where analytical instruments are sensitive to electrical interference.

Small Conveyor and Transfer Table

Short conveyor sections (1 to 3 m) for parts transfer in assembly areas, light packaging conveyors in retail environments, and museum display or retail shop moving display fixtures. YS 60 to 370 W with NMRV at 40:1 to 80:1 for slow display movement at 5 to 20 rpm output.

Small Pump and Blower

Centrifugal pumps for small process flows (10 to 50 L/min), air blowers for drying and cooling in light industrial processes, and water circulation pumps in small laboratory or process systems. YS 250 to 750 W direct drive at 1,400 to 2,800 rpm depending on pole count. Higher efficiency than single-phase at the same flow duty.

Workshop Machinery Drive

Metal lathe headstock drive, bench grinder, column drill, and wood lathe in three-phase workshops. YS 370 to 750 W provides higher starting torque and better speed regulation under cutting load than equivalent single-phase motors, improving machined surface quality and tool life in light precision work.

8. Frequently Asked Questions

I only have single-phase 220 V supply in my workshop. Can I still use the YS three-phase motor?

Yes — through a single-phase to three-phase VFD converter. These devices accept single-phase 220 V input and output three-phase 380 V at variable frequency for driving three-phase motors. For the YS series, a 0.4 to 1.5 kW single-to-three-phase micro-VFD provides the three-phase supply the motor needs from a standard single-phase wall outlet. The motor also gains the variable speed control function of the VFD as part of the conversion. This approach is widely used in small workshop settings where only single-phase supply is available but the user wants the reliability advantages of three-phase squirrel-cage motors over single-phase capacitor motors. The VFD must be sized at least 1.5 times the YS motor power rating when supplied from single-phase to account for the current derating in the VFD input stage.

What is the minimum load at which the YS motor operates reliably without overheating?

The YS motor can operate at any load from zero (no-load) to rated load without thermal problems. Three-phase squirrel-cage motors draw reactive magnetising current even at no-load, which generates some heat in the winding regardless of output torque. At very light load (below 25% of rated), the motor runs cool and the winding temperature stays well below the Class F limit. The motor actually runs coolest at around 80 to 90% of rated load where the efficiency is highest and copper losses are proportional to current squared. There is no minimum load requirement for the YS motor. This is in contrast to brushed DC motors and single-phase shaded-pole motors that can overheat under stall conditions — the squirrel-cage motor simply draws its no-load current continuously at any speed without thermal problems as long as the motor is not stalled (zero rpm at voltage).

Can the YS motor replace the single-phase motor on my existing machine without changing the wiring or switchgear?

This depends on what supply and switchgear your existing machine uses. If the machine is already connected to a three-phase supply and uses a single-phase motor tapped from one phase and neutral, then adding the YS three-phase motor requires rewiring the motor terminals to three-phase and replacing the single-phase contactor and overload relay with three-phase versions. If the machine only has single-phase 220 V supply available, a micro-VFD converter is needed as described above. In both cases, the YS motor will physically fit the existing motor mounting position if it is in the same IEC frame size as the existing motor — measure the existing motor shaft height, foot mounting hole spacing, and shaft diameter and compare with the YS frame dimensions before ordering. The IEC frame system means that the YS 63 to 90 frame motors will fit the same mounting position as any other IEC 63 to 90 motor regardless of manufacturer.
