Full Stainless Construction for Daily High-Pressure Washdown Environments

The BXG series is Korea Ever-Power stainless steel induction motor, engineered for wet process environments where the motor is exposed to daily or multiple-daily washdown cycles using high-pressure hot water and caustic cleaning agents. Every external component — frame, end-shields, terminal box, cooling fins, shaft, and fasteners — is manufactured from AISI 316L austenitic stainless steel, which provides superior resistance to chloride-containing cleaning agents, organic acids used in CIP procedures, and the warm humid atmosphere typical of food processing and pharmaceutical production areas.

The IP69K rating (IEC 60529 and ISO 20653) certifies protection against high-pressure water jets at 80 bar pressure, 80 °C temperature, applied at a distance of 0.1 to 0.15 metres from all angles. This is the most demanding water ingress protection rating in the IEC classification system, exceeding IP67 (temporary immersion), IP68 (continuous immersion), and IP69 (high-pressure steam) in the combination of pressure, temperature, and angular coverage it requires the motor to withstand. The BXG motor passes all four directional tests in the IP69K protocol without any water reaching the winding or bearing cavities.

Winding insulation is Class H (180 °C rated) with FDA-compliant silicone shaft seals and a food-grade grease fill in the bearings. The terminal box uses a stainless steel cover with a compressed silicone gasket rated for repeated thermal cycling. All external surfaces are finished to Ra 0.8 μm (equivalent to Ra 32 μinch) to prevent bacterial harbourage in surface crevices.

Typical Applications for BXG Stainless Steel Motors

BXG Stainless Motor Food Processing Washdown Application

Meat and Poultry Processing
Conveyor drives, portioning machine motors, and tumbler drives in meat and poultry processing plants are subjected to multiple daily washdowns at 60 to 80 bar using hot caustic foam and acidic sanitisers. The BXG IP69K motor withstands these cycles without gasket failure or bearing contamination, maintaining hygienic motor surfaces between production runs.
BXG Stainless Motor Pharmaceutical CIP Application

Pharmaceutical CIP Areas
Agitators, transfer pump motors, and tablet coating pan drives in pharmaceutical manufacturing areas subject to automated CIP cleaning cycles require stainless steel IP69K motors that maintain surface finish integrity through repeated exposure to steam, hot water, and pharmaceutical-grade cleaning agents.
BXG Stainless Motor Beverage Plant Application

Beverage Filling Lines
Bottle filler carousels, rinsing stations, and pasteuriser conveyor drives in breweries, dairies, and soft drink plants require IP69K motors that resist the continuous humidity, foam cleaning agents, and occasional product spillage encountered in the filling hall environment.
🍣
Fish and Seafood Processing
Fish gutting, filleting, and freezing line conveyor motors operate in high-humidity, high-salt environments with frequent hot water and sanitiser washdowns. The 316L stainless frame resists both chloride pitting and the mildly acidic washdown solutions used in seafood processing.
🏧
Commercial Laundry
Industrial washing machine motors and conveyor drives in commercial laundry facilities require IP69K protection against the detergent-laden steam and hot water spray generated during loading and unloading of large-capacity washing machines.
Chemical Dosing Systems
Pump motors for acid and alkali dosing skids in water treatment plants use stainless steel IP69K motors to withstand incidental chemical splashing and the periodic high-pressure washing required to maintain chemical plant hygiene and prevent crust buildup on motor surfaces.

What IP69K Means and Why It Matters for Washdown Motors

The IP69K Test Protocol

IP69K certification requires the motor to be subjected to a water jet at 80 bar pressure and 80 °C temperature, delivered through a 6.3 mm nozzle at a flow rate of 14 to 16 litres per minute. The nozzle is held at 0.1 to 0.15 metres from the motor surface and applied from four angular positions (0°, 30°, 60°, and 90° from horizontal) for 30 seconds each. After all tests, no water may reach the winding or bearing cavities. This is significantly more demanding than IP65 (low-pressure jets), IP66 (high-pressure jets at lower temperature), or IP67 (immersion), none of which simulate the washdown conditions in food and pharmaceutical production.

316L vs 304 Stainless Steel

The BXG uses AISI 316L (EN 1.4404) stainless steel throughout. The addition of 2 to 3% molybdenum in 316L versus 304 stainless steel raises the critical pitting corrosion potential in chloride solutions from approximately 200 mV to over 600 mV, making 316L resistant to pitting in saline cleaning agents, sea air environments, and the chlorinated water used in many food-grade sanitising solutions. The low-carbon L grade prevents sensitisation (grain boundary carbide precipitation) during welding operations used in motor frame fabrication, maintaining full corrosion resistance across welded joints.

Class H Insulation for Thermal Cycling

Washdown environments subject the motor to rapid thermal cycling: the motor may be at 80 to 100 °C operating temperature when cold water at 10 °C is applied during a washdown cycle. Class H insulation (180 °C rated, with vacuum-pressure impregnation) resists the thermal shock of this rapid cooling without cracking or delamination. The Class H rating also provides a substantial thermal margin above the Class F temperature-rise limit, ensuring winding life is not compromised by the slightly elevated winding temperatures that occur when washdown water cooling temporarily reduces the external fin surface temperature differential during motor operation.

Frequently Asked Questions — BXG Series Stainless Steel IP69K Motor

Is the BXG motor suitable for direct food contact applications?
The BXG motor is designed for use in food processing environments but is not intended for direct immersion in food product. The motor exterior — including the 316L stainless frame, stainless fasteners, and food-grade H1 bearing grease — is compliant with materials regulations for incidental food contact. The FDA-compliant silicone shaft seals prevent food product from entering the motor along the shaft. For applications where the motor drives an impeller that contacts food product directly, Korea Ever-Power can discuss shaft seal options appropriate to the specific food contact and cleaning regime required.
Can the BXG motor be used with a VFD for speed control in a washdown environment?
Yes. The Class H winding insulation of the BXG motor provides inherent resistance to PWM voltage spikes from variable-frequency drives, making it suitable for VFD operation without additional inter-turn insulation reinforcement over the 380 V to 480 V range. The VFD panel should be located outside the washdown zone in a sealed enclosure appropriate to the external environment. For continuous VFD operation below 25 Hz at rated load, an external forced-air blower should be fitted to maintain cooling airflow, since the shaft-mounted fan delivers reduced airflow at low speed.
What cleaning agents are compatible with the BXG motor?
The 316L stainless steel frame is resistant to dilute nitric acid (used in pharmaceutical passivation), phosphoric acid, citric acid, sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite (at concentrations below 200 ppm), peracetic acid (at standard CIP concentrations up to 0.2%), and quaternary ammonium sanitisers. Concentrated hydrochloric acid and concentrated sulphuric acid will attack 316L stainless steel and must not be used for motor cleaning. Chlorinated cleaning agents above 200 ppm sodium hypochlorite should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis depending on application temperature and contact duration. Korea Ever-Power can provide a material compatibility data sheet on request.
How does the BXG motor bearing arrangement handle washdown water?
The BXG uses sealed bearings (2RS suffix — rubber-sealed on both sides) prefilled with food-grade H1 bearing grease. The sealed bearing design prevents water from reaching the rolling elements even if washdown water penetrates the labyrinth seal at the end-shield bore. For smaller frame sizes (71M through 90L) the sealed bearings are maintenance-free for the bearing service life. For larger frame sizes (100L and above), regreasable bearings with food-grade grease nipples are used; regreasing is recommended every 4,000 operating hours or 12 months. Only food-grade H1 grease should be used for regreasing to maintain food area compliance.
Is the BXG available in ATEX / Ex d configuration for classified food processing areas?
Standard BXG motors are not Ex certified. For food processing areas that are classified as hazardous due to the presence of flammable solvents or combustible food dusts (e.g. flour, sugar, cocoa), a combination of Ex d flameproof or Ex t dust-ignitionproof protection with stainless steel construction is required. Korea Ever-Power can discuss custom stainless steel flameproof motor configurations for classified food processing areas on a project-specific basis. Please provide the zone classification, gas or dust group, and temperature class requirements when making an enquiry.
What surface finish is provided and why does it matter?
All external surfaces of the BXG motor are finished to Ra 0.8 μm (equivalent to 32 μinch Ra). This surface roughness class is specified by food industry hygiene standards as the maximum roughness at which bacteria cannot harbour in surface crevices and can be reliably removed by standard cleaning procedures. Rougher surfaces (above Ra 1.6 μm) may retain bacteria in surface pits even after washdown, while smoother surfaces (below Ra 0.4 μm) provide diminishing additional hygiene benefit at significantly increased machining cost. The Ra 0.8 μm specification represents the industry-accepted optimum for food contact adjacent surfaces and is maintained on the motor frame, end-shields, and terminal box cover as supplied.
