Why Order a Gearmotor Instead of Motor and Gearbox Separately

A gearmotor is a factory-assembled unit in which the motor and gearbox leave the production facility as a single item, pre-aligned on the IEC flange interface, filled with the correct grade and quantity of gear lubricant for the gearbox type, and run at load on the factory test bench before shipment. The mechanical interface between motor and gearbox is an IEC B5 or B14 pilot bore and bolt circle, which aligns the two units to within the tolerance of the machined surfaces — no field alignment procedure is required, and the input shaft of the gearbox and the motor shaft are engaged inside the gearbox housing without any exposed coupling or coupling guard.

For project procurement, ordering a gearmotor rather than separate motor and gearbox reduces the bill of materials to a single line item with a single part number, a single delivery, and a single supplier warranty. In high-volume installations such as conveyor systems with 20 to 100 identical drive stations, the reduction in procurement administration, goods receiving inspection, and site assembly labour from receiving pre-built gearmotors versus separate components is substantial.

Korea Ever-Power assembles gearmotors from the full motor range (Y2, YD, YVF2, Y2EJ, YB2, BXG) matched with any of the five gearbox families (RV/NMRV worm, R inline helical, F parallel shaft helical, K bevel-helical, S helical-worm) across the overlapping frame size and power range. All gearmotor combinations carry a unified product warranty covering both the motor and gearbox as a single assembly.

Typical Applications for Korea Ever-Power Gearmotors

Gearmotor Belt Conveyor Drive Application

Belt and Screw Conveyors
R series inline helical gearmotors are the standard specification for belt conveyor head pulley drives from 0.75 kW to 90 kW, providing 94 to 96% combined efficiency across the full power range. F series parallel shaft gearmotors serve tail-end and intermediate drives where axial space behind the pulley shaft is restricted.
Gearmotor Food Processing Line Drive

Food and Beverage Lines
NMRV worm gearmotors with BXG stainless IP69K motors serve washdown conveyor drives in meat, dairy, and beverage facilities. K series bevel-helical gearmotors with Y2EJ brake motors drive portion control and portioning table indexing where right-angle geometry and exact positioning are both required.
Gearmotor Chemical Plant Agitator Drive

Agitator and Mixer Drives
S series helical-worm gearmotors serve top-entry vessel agitators in chemical plants where the agitator shaft must hold position on power loss without a separate brake (self-locking). K series bevel-helical gearmotors serve large side-entry agitators above 15 kW where heat generation at the gearbox is a process-area concern.
🏭
Textile and Winding Machines
NMRV worm gearmotors with YVF2 VFD-duty motors provide variable-speed tension-controlled yarn and thread winding. The compact right-angle package fits within narrow machine column spacing, and the self-locking at 50:1 to 100:1 holds the wound package when the drive stops between doff cycles.
📄
Printing and Paper Handling
R series helical gearmotors with YVF2 motors drive paper web tension rolls on web-fed printing presses, providing smooth variable-speed control without the gear-tooth noise that would interfere with press registration systems across the full production speed range.
Pump and Fan Auxiliary Drives
NMRV and R series gearmotors drive lube oil pre-lube pumps, cooling tower fan auxiliary drives, and HVAC damper actuators as compact single-unit assemblies that can be mounted and wired by a single technician without specialist alignment tools.

Specifying a Gearmotor: Four Parameters That Define the Selection

1. Required Output Speed (rpm)

Output speed determines the gear ratio required. Divide the motor synchronous speed (1440 rpm for 4-pole at 50 Hz, or 960 rpm for 6-pole) by the required output speed to get the nominal ratio. For example, a conveyor requiring 28 rpm from a 4-pole motor needs a ratio of 1440 / 28 = 51.4:1. Choose the nearest standard ratio in the chosen gearbox family. If the exact speed is critical (process line synchronisation), specify the required output speed and Korea Ever-Power will verify the actual achieved speed at the selected ratio.

2. Required Output Torque (N·m) and Service Factor

Output torque equals the load torque at the driven shaft, multiplied by the application service factor. Service factors: 1.0 for smooth uniform loads, 1.5 for moderate shock (conveyors with start-stop), 2.0 to 2.5 for heavy shock (agitators starting under full load, crushers). The gearbox rated output torque must exceed this product. A common error is to size the gearbox based only on motor power and ratio without applying a service factor, which leads to premature gear and bearing wear in shock-load applications.

3. Shaft Geometry and Load-Holding Requirement

Choose the gearbox type based on shaft direction (inline R or F; right-angle RV, K, or S) and whether self-locking is needed (RV above 30:1 or S above 35:1 for load-holding without a brake; R, F, and K are always back-driveable and require a motor brake for load holding). For right-angle drives above 1,500 N·m output torque, only the K or S series applies. For right-angle drives requiring self-locking above 4,000 N·m, consult Korea Ever-Power for a custom solution.

Frequently Asked Questions — Korea Ever-Power Gearmotors

Can I specify a VFD-duty motor (YVF2) with any gearbox type in the gearmotor range?
Yes. The YVF2 series motor can be paired with any of the five gearbox types as a factory gearmotor. When specifying a VFD gearmotor, provide the required output speed range rather than a fixed output speed, and Korea Ever-Power will recommend the appropriate ratio to give the desired output speed range within the VFD operating frequency range of 10 to 60 Hz. For applications where gearmotor output speed must vary below 25% of rated speed under continuous full-load duty, an external cooling fan on the YVF2 motor is recommended and can be factory-fitted before assembly of the gearmotor unit.
Can I specify an electromagnetic brake motor (Y2EJ) with a helical gearbox in the gearmotor range?
Yes. The Y2EJ brake motor can be assembled as a gearmotor with R, F, K, or NMRV gearboxes. The brake disc housing is at the non-drive end of the Y2EJ motor, and the gearbox mounts on the drive end flange, so the brake and gearbox do not interfere mechanically. Y2EJ brake motor gearmotors are the standard solution for R and F series helical gearboxes used in inclined conveyor, hoist, and positioning drives, because the helical gearbox is back-driveable (load would roll back on power loss without the brake) and the Y2EJ brake engages in under 0.4 seconds of power interruption to hold the load.
What information is needed to place a gearmotor order?
To generate a gearmotor specification and quotation, Korea Ever-Power needs: (1) motor type (Y2, YVF2, Y2EJ, YB2, or BXG) and power in kW; (2) supply voltage and frequency; (3) gearbox type (RV/NMRV, R, F, K, or S) and required ratio or output speed in rpm; (4) output shaft type (solid keyed or hollow bore with shrink disc); (5) mounting orientation (horizontal, vertical shaft upward, vertical shaft downward, or other); (6) application description and duty cycle (continuous, intermittent, number of starts per hour); (7) any special requirements such as dual output shaft, tropical duty insulation, food-grade lubricant, or non-standard paint finish. With this information, Korea Ever-Power provides a matched gearmotor specification with dimensional drawing within 2 working days.
Is the gearmotor supplied with a motor connection diagram and gearbox installation manual?
Yes. Each gearmotor shipment includes the motor wiring diagram (terminal connection for the specified voltage and star or delta configuration), the gearbox installation and maintenance manual (covering mounting orientation, oil level verification, and oil change intervals), and a dimensional drawing of the assembled unit. For gearmotors incorporating a YVF2 motor, the VFD connection guide and recommended VFD parameter settings are also included. For Y2EJ brake motor gearmotors, the brake rectifier wiring diagram and brake torque setting instructions are supplied. All documents are in English as standard; other languages are available on request.
Can the motor be replaced independently if it fails, without replacing the gearbox?
Yes. The IEC B5 or B14 flange interface between the motor and gearbox is a standard mechanical connection. If the motor fails and the gearbox is serviceable, a replacement motor of the same frame size and pole count can be mounted on the gearbox without any modification to either component. The replacement motor should be of the same type (same IEC frame, same shaft diameter and keyway, same B5 or B14 flange diameter and pilot bore) as the original. Korea Ever-Power can supply a replacement motor to match any gearmotor supplied, and can provide the motor frame and shaft specification from the original order reference if the nameplate data is unavailable at the time of the replacement enquiry.
What is the standard warranty for Korea Ever-Power gearmotors?
Korea Ever-Power gearmotors carry a 24-month warranty from the date of shipment covering manufacturing defects in both the motor and gearbox components as a single assembly. The warranty covers repair or replacement of defective components at Korea Ever-Power discretion, and applies to gearmotors operated within their rated duty, mounted according to the instruction documentation, and lubricated with the specified lubricant grade at the specified intervals. Warranty claims require the motor serial number and gearbox serial number (both marked on the respective nameplates of the assembled unit) and a description of the failure mode. Contact Korea Ever-Power at the enquiry page with this information to initiate a warranty assessment.
