1. Packaging Machine Motion Profile
Unlike a conveyor motor that runs continuously at one speed, a packaging machine drive motor performs a repetitive start-run-stop cycle that repeats with every pack, label, or fill operation. Understanding this motion profile is essential for correct gearmotor selection because the thermal energy from repeated starting and braking accumulates in the motor and gearbox and must be dissipated within each cycle’s rest period.
Duration: 0.5 s per cycle
Gearmotor drives film feed roller at output speed matched to film pitch per pack
Motor at rated load
Duration: 0.3 s per cycle
Motor stopped; sealing jaws close and heat-seal the film
Motor at zero speed — brake holds position
Duration: 0.2 s per cycle
Jaws open; motor accelerates for next film draw stroke
Motor ramps from zero to rated speed
Total cycle: 1.0 s (60 packs/min)
On-time: 0.5 s (50% CDF)
Off-time: 0.5 s
60 start-stop cycles/min = 3,600/hr
This high cycle rate — 3,600 start-stop events per hour — exceeds the rated 240 braking operations per hour of a standard Y2EJ brake motor. For machines above 60 cycles per minute, the gearmotor specification must account for the thermal accumulation of repeated starting and braking, or the drive architecture must be modified (servo drive, cam-driven mechanical indexer, or oversize motor selected to S4 duty).
2. Gear Ratio Selection for Output Speed
The NMRV gearmotor output speed must be matched to the film draw rate, label pitch, or fill volume per cycle of the specific packaging machine. The target output shaft speed is calculated from the required throughput rate and the mechanical linkage between the gearmotor output shaft and the packaging function it drives.
| Packaging Function | Typical Output Speed | NMRV Ratio (4P input) | NMRV Size | Motor Power |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Film feed roller (VFFS) | 30–120 rpm | 12–50:1 | NMRV 050–063 | 0.37–1.1 kW |
| Label applicator drum | 20–80 rpm | 18–75:1 | NMRV 040–050 | 0.18–0.55 kW |
| Auger filler screw | 50–200 rpm | 7–30:1 | NMRV 050–075 | 0.37–2.2 kW |
| Case erector infeed | 20–60 rpm | 25–75:1 | NMRV 050–063 | 0.18–0.75 kW |
| Carton conveyor index | 10–40 rpm | 36–100:1 | NMRV 063–075 | 0.37–1.5 kW |
| Shrink tunnel conveyor | 60–200 rpm | 7–25:1 | NMRV 050–063 | 0.55–2.2 kW |
Film pitch per pack = 200 mm. Machine rate = 60 packs/min. Film feed roller circumference = 150 mm (radius 23.9 mm). Required roller speed = (60 packs/min × 200 mm) ÷ 150 mm = 80 rpm. With 4-pole motor at 1,450 rpm: required ratio = 1,450 ÷ 80 = 18.1:1 → specify NMRV 050 with 20:1 ratio, 4-pole Y2EJ 0.55 kW. Actual output speed = 1,450 ÷ 20 = 72.5 rpm. Film draw per revolution = 150 mm × 72.5/60 = 181 mm/s — adjust roller diameter or ratio to match exact film pitch.
3. Self-Locking for Position Holding Between Cycles
NMRV worm gearmotors at ratios of 40:1 and above are reliably self-locking — the output shaft cannot be back-driven by load forces when the motor is stopped. For packaging applications where the driven mechanism is essentially frictionless during the dwell phase (label applicator drum at rest, auger filler screw at rest between fills) and where stopping at the exact position of a mechanical cam stop is acceptable, the worm gear self-locking at 40:1 or above eliminates the need for a separate brake motor. The motor simply stops and the self-locking worm holds the position passively without any additional holding torque.
A Y2EJ brake motor is required in place of a standard Y2 when: the machine operates at a gear ratio below 30:1 where self-locking is not reliable; when high-frequency stop-start cycling requires a defined and repeatable stop time for tooling registration accuracy; when the packaging machine has a safety guard interlock that requires motor stop confirmation before the guard can be opened; or when the film or product must stop within a defined distance to prevent overshoot that would misregister the seal position. At gear ratios between 20:1 and 35:1, always specify the Y2EJ brake motor to avoid relying on the uncertain self-locking behaviour in this transition zone.
4. Brake Motor Option for Fast and Repeatable Stop
For packaging machines requiring precise tooling registration at every cycle, the Korea Ever-Power NMRV gearmotor is assembled with a Y2EJ brake motor in place of the standard Y2 motor. The integral spring-applied brake provides a stop time below 0.3 seconds from rated speed, which combined with the gear ratio gives a predictable and repeatable stop position at the output shaft.
The output shaft stop position repeatability of an NMRV gearmotor with Y2EJ brake depends on the stop time consistency and the load inertia. At a consistent stop time of 0.2 s from an output shaft speed of 60 rpm, the output shaft rotates (60 rpm ÷ 60 s) × 0.2 s = 0.2 revolutions during braking. For a film feed roller with 150 mm circumference, this corresponds to 30 mm of film overshoot — which must be accounted for in the mechanical cam stop or electronic cycle length setting. The stop position is highly repeatable cycle-to-cycle because the brake torque and load inertia are constant, making the NMRV + Y2EJ combination suitable for registration-dependent packaging functions.
The motor brake stops the motor shaft in 0.1 to 0.4 seconds depending on motor size and brake torque. The output shaft stop time is the same as the motor shaft stop time because the worm gear does not introduce significant additional inertia at the output speed (the motor inertia dominates total system inertia reflected to the motor shaft). Output shaft overshoot after the brake engages = (output rpm ÷ 60) × t-stop × 360° — this overshoot angle must be within the registration tolerance of the machine application.
The Y2EJ brake motor includes a manual release lever that allows the maintenance technician to release the brake and rotate the output shaft by hand when the machine is jammed or when setting the tooling position before a production run. The manual release must be disengaged and confirmed returned to the automatic position before the machine is returned to production. Korea Ever-Power Y2EJ motors include a visual indicator on the manual release mechanism to confirm the brake is in automatic mode.
5. Cycle Rate and Thermal Rating
The NMRV gearbox thermal rating and the Y2EJ brake motor starting frequency rating must both be confirmed against the actual packaging machine cycle rate. These are two independent thermal limits that must both be satisfied simultaneously.
Standard NMRV thermal ratings assume continuous S1 duty at rated input power. For packaging machine intermittent duty with a 40 to 60% on-time CDF, the gearbox can accept an input power 15 to 25% above the S1 thermal limit. However, at high cycle rates (above 120 cycles/min) the gearbox heat generation from repeated meshing impacts may approach the S1 continuous thermal limit even at partial load. Verify the gearbox housing temperature during initial machine trials at maximum production rate and confirm it stays below 80°C after 2 hours at peak rate.
The Korea Ever-Power Y2EJ brake motor is rated for a maximum of 240 braking operations per hour (operating class AC3 per IEC 60947). At 60 packs/min this equates to 3,600 braking operations per hour — 15 times the rated limit. For packaging machines above 30 cycles/minute with a Y2EJ brake motor, the drive architecture must use a servo motor, a stepper motor with gearbox, or a mechanically indexed cam-driven arrangement rather than the start-stop motor approach. The Y2EJ is suitable for packaging machines up to 30 cycles/minute (1,800 cycles/hour) if a 2.0 safety factor on the brake rating is applied, reducing the effective limit to 120 cycles/hour = 2 cycles/minute — appropriate for slow carton erectors, case sealers, and pallet wrappers rather than high-speed film packaging.
Application guideline: specify NMRV gearmotor with standard Y2 motor (no brake) for continuous film pulling drives where speed is fixed and position is controlled mechanically by cams. Specify NMRV gearmotor with Y2EJ brake motor for indexing drives at below 120 cycles/hour. For high-speed indexing above 120 cycles/hour, use a servo gearmotor with Korea Ever-Power NMRV gearbox on the servo motor output rather than a brake motor.

7. Packaging Machine Applications
Vertical Form-Fill-Seal (VFFS) Machine
VFFS machines for snack food, coffee, frozen vegetables, and powders use NMRV 050–063 gearmotors at 15:1 to 40:1 ratios for the film feed roller drive. The film feed motor is typically the main line speed reference motor for the machine — all other functions (fill auger, jaw sealer, cross-cut) are electronically synchronised to the film feed rate. NMRV gearmotor with standard Y2 motor at 0.37 to 0.75 kW covers the majority of VFFS film feed applications up to 80 packs/min. Above 80 packs/min, a servo gearmotor is required for the film feed axis. |
Filling Machine and Dosing Drive
Auger fillers for powders, piston fillers for pastes and creams, and peristaltic pump fillers for liquids all use NMRV gearmotors for the fill volume control drive. The auger filler screw runs for a defined number of revolutions per fill cycle — NMRV 050–075 with Y2EJ brake motor at 10:1 to 30:1 provides the fill-run-stop cycle with accurate stopping at the end of each fill rotation. Output speed 50 to 150 rpm for typical auger diameters in food powder filling applications. |
Label peel and feed roller on self-adhesive labelling machines. NMRV 040–050 with Y2 at 18:1 to 50:1 for label drum at 20 to 80 rpm. Self-locking at 40:1 or above provides position hold between label cycles without brake motor.
Infeed and discharge conveyor drives on shrink-wrap tunnels run continuously at fixed speed — NMRV 050 with standard Y2 (no brake) at 10:1 to 20:1 for 60 to 150 rpm output. No start-stop cycling; continuous S1 duty thermal rating applies.
Case sealer infeed and outfeed conveyors use NMRV 063 with Y2EJ at 20:1 to 40:1 for accurate case positioning at the sealing heads. Low cycle rate (below 20 cases/min) keeps starts below the Y2EJ 240 braking operations/hour thermal limit.
Turntable drive on rotary arm pallet stretch wrappers uses NMRV 075–090 at 40:1 to 60:1 for slow turntable rotation at 5 to 15 rpm. Self-locking worm provides pallet hold at any position when wrapping cycle is paused. Y2 4-pole 0.75 to 1.5 kW.
