Y2EJ Series 4-Pole Electromagnetic Brake Motor
Four-pole squirrel-cage induction motor with integral DC electromagnetic disc brake, running at approximately 1400 rpm with rapid positive stopping on power interruption. The most widely used pole configuration in the Y2EJ range — the standard specification for hoists, inclined conveyors, and machine tools where moderate speed, high torque, and fail-safe braking are all required.

The Standard Brake Motor for Hoists, Lifts, and Inclined Conveyors
The Y2EJ 4-pole brake motor is the most widely specified model in the Y2EJ range because 1400 rpm is the natural operating speed for the majority of hoist and conveyor applications. At this speed, gearbox ratios of 10:1 to 40:1 give load speeds in the 35 to 140 m/min range that covers most pallet conveyor, car park lift, and material hoist specifications. The higher torque of the 4-pole winding versus the 2-pole at the same power rating also reduces the gearbox ratio required, allowing a smaller and lighter gearbox body in the total drive assembly.
The integral spring-applied DC brake operates identically to the 2-pole variant but with a slightly longer stopping time (up to 0.2 seconds compared to 0.1 seconds for 2-pole) because the lower rotor speed means less kinetic energy is available to compress the spring through the friction pad. This modest difference has no practical consequence in hoist and conveyor applications where the load is statically held by the brake rather than decelerated to zero dynamically.
Frame sizes run from 63M through 180L, covering 0.12 kW to 22 kW. All models share the same brake architecture: DC 205 V electromagnet coil, adjustable spring preload, replaceable friction disc, and optional manual brake release lever. The brake housing is enclosed within the extended non-drive-end shield and rated IP54 as part of the overall motor assembly.

Typical Applications for Y2EJ 4-Pole Brake Motors
Inclined Belt Conveyors
Inclined conveyors carrying bulk material or unit loads use the 4-pole brake motor to prevent loaded belt rollback on power interruption. The spring-applied brake holds the full loaded belt weight without hydraulic or pneumatic backup systems, simplifying the installation and reducing maintenance requirements.
|
Material Hoists
Wire rope hoists and chain hoists in warehouses and workshops use the 4-pole brake motor because it delivers the combination of moderate lifting speed, high torque, and immediate load holding that suspended load safety regulations require in the majority of jurisdictions.
|
Food Line Positioning
Vertical lifts and transfer gates on food production lines use brake motors to hold product-carrying platforms and gates in position during filling or inspection operations, eliminating the need for separate mechanical locking devices that would require cleaning and certification.
|
|
🏗
Car Park Lifts
Automated car park platforms and puzzle parking systems use 4-pole brake motors for both horizontal travel and vertical lift axes, with the integral brake providing the fail-safe platform locking required by car park safety standards without an additional locking pin mechanism.
|
🛠
Machine Tool Tables
Vertical milling table Z-axis drives and radial arm drilling column drives use brake motors to hold the head at the machining position under cutting load without a separate clamp, allowing quick repositioning and re-engagement in production machining cycles.
|
🏢
Stage and Rigging Drives
Theatre flying bars, concert rigging systems, and stage lifts use brake motors certified for suspended load duty, where the fail-safe spring-set brake is a mandatory requirement under entertainment industry safety regulations for overhead mechanical systems.

Why the 4-Pole Variant Is the Most Specified Brake Motor in the Y2EJ Range
Torque-Speed Match for Hoist Gearboxes
Most hoist gearboxes are designed for input speeds of 1000 to 1500 rpm. The 4-pole motor at 1400 rpm sits in the centre of this range, giving the gearbox designer maximum flexibility in ratio selection. A 2-pole motor at 2800 rpm requires a higher gearbox ratio for the same output speed, increasing gearbox size and cost. A 6-pole motor at 960 rpm provides higher input torque but limits the maximum ratio range available in standard catalogue gearboxes. The 4-pole motor is therefore the natural choice for the largest selection of catalogue hoist and gearmotor combinations.
Brake Torque and Load Inertia
The brake torque listed in the specification table is the motor shaft torque applied by the brake disc. Reflected through the gearbox, this becomes a much larger braking torque at the load shaft: a 55 N·m brake torque at the motor shaft becomes 550 N·m at the load shaft through a 10:1 gearbox. This gearbox multiplication means that relatively small brake motor units can hold very large loads, which is why the Y2EJ range covers hoist applications well above the motor power rating alone would suggest.
Duty Cycle and Heat Management
Hoist and conveyor applications involve frequent start-stop cycles (S3 duty). Each braking event dissipates kinetic energy as heat in the friction disc lining. The 4-pole motor at 1400 rpm stores less kinetic energy per unit of rotor inertia than the 2-pole motor at 2800 rpm, so the thermal load on the brake disc per stopping event is lower. This translates directly to longer lining life in high-cycle applications and a lower frequency of brake disc replacement in intensive production hoist and conveyor duties.
